Santiago de Chile Airport (SCL) was founded in 1967 during the administration of Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. Its original name was Aeropuerto Pudahuel, but it was changed to Arturo Merino Benítez in 1980 to honor the first commander in Chief of the Chilean Air Force. In 1994, a new terminal for international flight was built, leaving the old one for domestic flights only. Finally, in 2001, yet another terminal was added to house international and domestic flights, giving the airport a capacity of 9 million passengers a year, with 17 operating airlines.
