Large bird generally a grey color with white spots. Lower off-white parts. Long ocher to dull-brown neck. Long yellowish legs. Dull brown horny beak. Lives in open fields, generally in groups, and they run at high speeds.

Distribution: There are two types of this bird in Chile. The Ñandú of Magellan, pterocnemia pennata pennata, in the pampas of Aysén to Magallanes, and introduced in the Tierra del Fuego; and the Ñandú of the puna, terocnemia pennata tarapacensis, found in the plateau of the Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama regions
Habitat: Open fields and patagonian pampas.
