Measures between 18 and 19 cm. Reddish brown upper parts with more intense reddish brown tail and wings. Off-white collar, superciliares, and throat. The rest of the lower parts are cream-colored with narrow dark brown bars.

Distribution: Two subespecies live in Chile: the Tapaculo S.a. albicollis, from Los Vilos, Choapa province, to Curicó, and the northern Tapaculo, S. a. atacamae, from the Paposo gorge (Antofagasta province) to Coquimbo (Elqui province). This subspecie is more pale.
Habitat: Slopes of hills of the Central Valley and Coastal Range foothills.
