We will start the route to one of the most important places in the region, which is the Conguillío National Park. The park is characterized by its vast forested area, where the araucaria stands out alongside other species, as well as its lagoons with pure, crystalline waters. Some of its main attractions include the Llaima volcano, the Verde, Arco Iris, Captrén, and Quepe lagoons, Conguillío lake, Salto Trucha Linda, Salto Truful-Truful, Sierra Nevada, Cerro La Cruz, and the Llaima Volcano Ski Center.
The area is located where the indigenous Pehuenche people once lived, which is reflected both in the objects found and the numerous indigenous names of important places and geographical features. Six hiking trails are identified: “Sierra Nevada,” with excellent views of Conguillío Lake, the Llaima volcano, and glaciers; “Los Carpinteros,” through forests of araucaria and lenga, leading to the Captrén lagoon, rich in birdlife; “Las Araucarias”; “Las Vertientes,” with 800 meters of extension, where several watercourses originating underground are crossed; “Cañadón del Truful-Truful,” which reveals the fascinating geological history of the area; and “Cerro Colorado,” which passes through the western slope of the Llaima volcano, offering views of the central valley and the scoria fields.
Conguillío National Park is located in the mountain area, between 700 and 2500 meters above sea level. It offers one of the most impressive combinations of nature. Its fauna includes, among others, the monito del monte, the smallest marsupial in the world, the condor, the harrier, and various waterfowl that can be seen from its lagoons. The lava flows from the Llaima Volcano at 3,125 meters above sea level are one of the most impressive places for visitors, as they will find lava formations that are rarely seen anywhere else in the world.
